In Minnesota, residents can personalize license plates for various vehicle types, including passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds. Personalized plates allow for a combination of letters, numbers, and spaces, subject to specific character limits and guidelines.
How to Get a Personalized Minnesota Plate
- Check Plate Availability: Currently, Minnesota does not offer an online tool to check the availability of personalized plate combinations. Applicants are encouraged to prepare multiple plate combination options when applying.
- Submit an Application: Complete the Application for Special Plates (Form PS2010) and submit it, along with the appropriate fee, to your local deputy registrar office.
- Await Approval: The Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) will review your application to ensure the requested plate combination adheres to state guidelines. The review process can take up to six weeks.
- Receive Your Plate: Once approved and processed, your personalized plate will be mailed to you or your local deputy registrar office. You will be notified when your plates are ready for pickup.
Important Notes for Minnesota Residents
- Character Limits:
- Passenger Vehicles: Up to 7 characters, including spaces and hyphens.
- Motorcycles and Mopeds: Up to 6 characters.
- Vertical Motorcycle Plates: Up to 4 characters.
- Prohibited Content: Plates must not contain offensive or inappropriate language. Combinations deemed by the DVS to have a profane, vulgar, lewd, or indecent meaning or connotation shall not be allowed.
- No Punctuation: Punctuation marks or special characters are not permitted. Spaces and hyphens are allowed and count as characters.
- Plate Ownership: Personalized plates are generally tied to the vehicle owner, not the vehicle itself. If you sell your vehicle, you may transfer the personalized plates to another vehicle registered in your name.
- Renewal: Personalized plates must be renewed annually, along with your vehicle registration.
