How to Get a Personalized Maine Plate

1. Check Plate Availability: Before applying, verify if your desired plate combination is available using the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles' (BMV) Vanity Plate Search & Order Online Service.
2. Apply Online or by Mail:
   • Online: Use the Vanity Plate Search & Order Online Serviceto select your plate design, enter your desired combination, and complete the application process.
   • By Mail: Complete the Vanity Plate Application (MV-45)and submit it, along with a copy of your current registration and the appropriate fees, to the address listed on the form.
3. Await Approval: The BMV will review your application to ensure the requested plate combination adheres to state guidelines. Please allow at least 30 calendar days for processing.
4. Receive Your Plate: Once approved and processed, your personalized plate will be mailed to you.

Important Notes for Maine Residents

• Character Limits: Personalized plates can include up to 7 characters for most vehicle types. Spaces and dashes are permitted and count as characters.
• Prohibited Content: Plates must not contain offensive or inappropriate language. The Secretary of State may refuse to issue or may recall a vanity registration plate that falsely suggests an association with a public institution or government agency, is duplicative, encourages violence, is profane or obscene, or makes a derogatory reference to age, race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, ancestry or national origin, religion, or physical or mental disability.
• No Punctuation: Punctuation marks or special characters are not permitted.
• Plate Ownership: Personalized plates are generally tied to the vehicle owner, not the vehicle itself.
• Renewal: Personalized plates must be renewed annually, along with your vehicle registration.
