As of May 14, 2024, the Delaware DMV is no longer permitted to issue new vanity license plates due to a United States District Court decision . Existing vanity license plates issued before the court's decision are still eligible for renewal.
Important notes for Delaware residents:
- Although the Delaware DMV no longer issues new vanity plates, you can still obtain a variety of special license plates that can be ordered from any Division facility or by mail . Some examples include:
- University of Delaware Athletics Plate
- Delaware Pride Council Plate
- Pollinator License Plate
- Delaware State Education Association Centennial License Plate
- Agricultural Farmland Preservation License Plate
- Animal Welfare License Plate
- These special plates are restricted to passenger vehicles or trucks with a 3/4-ton or less manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating .
Fees:
The fees for special license plates in Delaware vary. For example:
- University of Delaware Athletics Plate: $50.00 one-time purchase price
- Delaware State Education Association Centennial License Plate: $15 one-time purchase price
- Animal Welfare License Plate: $50.00 one-time fee
- Agricultural Farmland Preservation License Plate: $50.00 one-time fee
- Protecting Delaware's Children Fund: $50.00 initial fee, $40.00 annual renewal fee
- Environmental Plates (Horseshoe Crab and Lighthouse Plate): $50.00 one-time fee
- MERR Plate (Marine Mammal & Sea Turtle Rescue & Conservation Plate): $50.00 one-time fee
